HISTORY

RAISING OF THE BEAR FLAG

Before the Bear Flag Republic was declared, California was a department of Mexico called Alta California.
In the 1840's, American pioneers traveled in large wagon trains from Missouri to Alta California only to be met by frustrating news.
The raising of the Bear Flag took General Mariano Vallejo by surprise on that early morning of June 14, 1846.
After the Bear Flag was raised, William Ide issued a proclamation for the new California Republic.
